WordPress is the world’s most popular content management system (CMS), powering millions of websites globally. However, a website truly becomes effective when it’s available in the user’s native language. That’s why I contributed to WordPress theme translation — an experience I’m truly proud of.
Why Theme Translation Matters?
WordPress themes control the design and layout of a website, but often these themes are initially in English. This can make it challenging for users who aren’t comfortable with English.
Translating themes for Bengali speakers is crucial because it:
- Makes usage easier
- Enhances user experience
- Supports local businesses and bloggers
- Makes technology accessible to everyone
How I Contributed
I participated in WordPress.org’s translation platform (GlotPress) and translated the strings of a particular theme into Bengali. I made sure each word and phrase was accurately and meaningfully translated.
During the translation process, I kept in mind:
- Not just literal translation, but meaningful adaptation
- Using standard Bengali for technical terms
- Consistency in translation
- Ensuring user comprehension
For example:
- “Read More” becomes “আরও পড়ুন”
- “Search” becomes “অনুসন্ধান”
- “Submit” becomes “জমা দিন”
What I Learned from This Experience
This contribution taught me a lot:
1. The Importance of Open Source Community
WordPress is an open-source project, and everyone contributes voluntarily. I realized that even small contributions can make a big difference.
2. The Power of Language
Accurate translation makes software much more user-friendly.
3. Teamwork and Review Process
After submitting translations, they are reviewed, ensuring higher quality and fewer mistakes.
Why Everyone Should Contribute
If you:
- Use WordPress
- Are passionate about improving the Bengali language
- Want to get involved in open source
Then you can start by translating themes or plugins. Coding skills are not mandatory; language skills are enough.
Future Plans
I plan to continue translating more themes and plugins and also encourage new contributors.
WordPress is more than just software — it’s a community, and I’m proud to be a part of it.
